Originally bridal showers were meant to ensure that  the bride-to-be was well prepared for house keeping in her own home and her marriage in general.  In fact, according to www.world-wedding-traditions.net, "The roots of the customary bridal shower originated in Holland.  If a Dutch bride was unfortunate enough to have her father disapprove of her choice in husbands, he would not offer a dowry. Her friends would then "shower" her with gifts so she could still be married to her groom, without the help of her father."

Today the purpose of giving a bridal shower is twofold.  The shower is held to provide the bride-to-be with various gifts that will help her set up her new home and settle in to housekeeping.  Also, the shower now provides a way for the women who surround her to provide a sense of support as she enters this new phase in her life. At the bridal  shower, advice is given and stories about married life are shared with her in addition to the gifts. It is for this very reason that most showers are planned to be small so that the bride-to-be gets to talk individually to all of her guests.

In today's society, it is not at all unsual for two or three showers to be scheduled for a bride before the wedding. Sometimes one will be given by a member of her immediate family, then a second shower will be given for her by her Maid of Honor for the bride-to-be's friends, and sometimes one will also be given for the bride-to-be by her co-workers.

No matter who holds the shower for the bride, or how many showers are held for her, good food is a must to go with all the good company. This is where we come in!
